  • 脇田和の絵 — 目に映るものたちや、触れるもの、耳に響く小さきものの声も、時に嬉々として躍動し、整然と調和した美しき音色をキャンバスの上で奏でます。

  • 絵を学ぶために15歳でベルリンに渡った時から筆をおくその日まで、脇田は、毎日のデッサンを止めることはありませんでした。
    そして、ある日の“鳥との出会い”が、画家を自身と対峙させその先へと導いていきます。
    晩年に描いた大作「鳥の来る道」（150号/1986年）は、約80年に及ぶ画業の中で、代表作の一つとなりました。
  • 脇田は、東京にあった最初のアトリエを戦争で焼失しますが、1949年に新たにアトリエを設け創作に打ち込みました。
    本展では、戦前や戦後1940年代後半以降に描かれた稀少作品等を新装にて紹介する他、軽井沢にアトリエを構えた1970年以降に描かれた油彩代表作を中心に、素描、コラージュ作品等の習作他、脇田が初期から熱心に取り組んでいた版画作品も多数展示し、画家の創作の原点に触れながら、真摯にみつめてきた芸術の軌跡を多角的に紹介いたします。

  • Kazu Wakita's paintings — the things we see, the things we touch, and the voices of little things we hear sometimes come alive with joy, playing beautiful, harmonious melodies on the canvas.
  • From the moment he moved to Berlin at the age of 15 to study art until the day he put down his brush, Wakita never stopped drawing every day. Then, one day, an encounter with a bird leads the painter to confront himself and guides him further. His large-scale work "Passage that Birds Come By" (150-size canvas, 1986), painted in his later years, became one of his representative works in his approximately 80-year career.
  • Although Wakita lost his first studio in Tokyo during the war, he established a new studio in 1949 and devoted himself to his creative work. This exhibition presents rare works painted before the war and from the late 1940s onward, in newly arranged displays. It also focuses on representative oil paintings created since 1970, when Wakita established his studio in Karuizawa, and numerous works, including sketches, collages, and prints that Wakita has diligently pursued since his early career. Through these works, the exhibition offers a multifaceted look at the artist's artistic journey, touching upon the origins of his creative process.
  • ＊In 1949, he purchased a house with an attached studio that had been used by Yoshihisa Komada, who studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts and later died in the war (built in 1942, designed by Kiyoshi Yasuda of the Ministry of Finance's Building Maintenace Division).
  • ＊The studio was renovated in 1959 (designed by Junzo Yoshimura), but the studio no longer exists.

    脇田 和　KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005年)
    1908(明治41)年東京生まれ。15歳の時ベルリンに渡り、17歳でベルリン国立美術学校に入学。1930(昭和5)年同校より金メダルを贈られ帰国。1932(昭和7)年太平洋画会初入選。以後、光風会、帝展などで受賞を重ねる。1936(昭和11)年猪熊弦一郎、小磯良平らと新制作派協会(現・新制作協会)を設立。戦後、1950年代にはサンパウロ・ビエンナーレ、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ等に出品。「あらそい」が第１回グッゲンハイム国際美術賞に輝いた。1959〜70年東京藝術大学で教鞭をとる。1970(昭和45)年、軽井沢に吉村順三設計によるアトリエ山荘が完成。1991(平成３)年『脇田美術館』を開設。1995(平成７)年〜2012（平成24）年、東京・第一生命本社ビルに脇田和作品常設ギャラリー。2005(平成17)年11月27日永眠。1991(平成3)年旭日小綬章。1998(平成10)年文化功労者。2005(平成17)年従四位を追賜。

  • Biography

    KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005)
    Born in Tokyo in 1908. He had a chance to move to Berlin at the age of 15 and entered the National Art School of Berlin at the age of 17. He was awarded a gold medal from the school in 1930, and returned to Japan. He was awarded his first prize at the Taihei Youga Kai in 1932, followed by many awards at Kofukai and the Imperial Fine Arts Academy Art Exhibition (Teikoku Bijutsu-in). Founded Shin Seisaku-ha Kyokai (currently Shin Seisaku Kyokai) with Ryohei Koiso and Genichiro Inokuma. After the war, in the 1950s, his works were exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Venice Biennale, etc. He won the first Guggenheim International Art Award. He taught at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1959 to 1970. Atelier Villa designed by Junzo Yoshimura was completed in Karuizawa in 1970. “Wakita Museum of Art” was opened in 1991. A permanent gallery of Kazu Wakita's works was open at the Dai-ichi Life Headquarters Building in Tokyo, from 1995 to 2012. He passed away on November 27, 2005. His contributions were recognized with The Order of the Rising Sun in 1991, and Person of Cultural Merits in 1998. He was raised to Junior Fourth Court Rank after his death.
