「鳥と果実」

  • 大空を凝眺し群鳥の渡る一瞬を楽しんだ、
    少年の頃の記憶

    幼少期を過ごした脇田の東京の家は、狸や貉のいる森林を背後に、大きな池が拡がる自然の庭があった。「河骨の黄色い花の咲く池に、かいつぶり、鴨の群も鷲も、時には鶴の姿も記憶する、この頃の遊びは、この池を中心に、釣りか、藪くぐりに明け暮れていた」と、脇田は懐古している。絵を好むようになってからは、家の屋根に上がって人目の届かぬ処で一人大空を凝眺し群鳥の渡る一瞬を楽しむような少年であったという。

    「私の脳裏にはこの時代の記憶が大きく占め、心の奥底から泡のように湧きでて絵のうちに溶け込むものが、今もって尽きない。鳥の存在に目を向けて来たのは、この頃からか、いつとはなく鳥は私の絵の主軸になっている。今は軽井沢に仕事を移した。ここは野鳥の宝庫といわれる。朝に夕に、鳥の群れが庭に飛来する。私はこの環境を満喫している。ここでの生活は少年の頃の思い出に繋がり、鳥と私の関係はいよいよ複雑多忙になるばかりである。鳥との縁は終生切れないのではないだろうか。」 （1975年記）

  • Memories of a boy who stared at the sky to enjoy the moment of county birds passing by

    Wakita's Tokyo house, where he spent his childhood, had a natural garden with a large pond behind a forest of raccoons and badgers. Wakita reminisces, “I remember a group of ducks, eagles, and sometimes cranes came to the pond where the yellow flowers of the river bone were in bloom. Those days, I was spending all my time fishing or going through the bushes around this pond.” He says that after he started to like painting, he used to escape the eyes of his family and climbed a branch of trees at the back of his house or climbed up to the roof of the house. He was a boy who gazed at the sky alone in a place that was out of sight and enjoyed the moment when the county birds passing by.

    “The memories of this era occupy a large part of my mind, and there are still endless things that spring up like bubbles from the depths of my heart and blend into the painting. It was around this time that I turned my attention to the existence of birds, and somehow birds have become the main axis of my paintings. Now I have moved to Karuizawa. This is said to be a treasure trove of wild birds. In the morning and evening, a flock of birds flies into the garden. I am enjoying this environment. Life here leads to memories of my childhood, and my relationship with birds is getting more complicated and busy. Perhaps the relationship with birds will never end.” (written in 1975)

  • 脇田和は、小磯良平や猪熊弦一郎らとともに新制作派協会を創立し、戦後は日米美術交流プログラムにも積極的に参加し、国内外で活動を続けていきました。身の周りの日常に注がれる温かなまなざしはいつもかわらず、さまざまな素材や技法への好奇心や、色と色が織りなす滑らかなリズムと美しさへの追求を、筆を置くその日まで止めることはありませんでした。本展では、脇田和が旧軽井沢に制作の居を移した1970年代から晩年までの作品を中心に、油彩、素描、コラージュ作品など、約100余点を展示し紹介していきます。その約80年に及ぶ画業の集積を美術館の空間の隅々で楽しむことができます。

    脇田 和　KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005年)
    1908(明治41)年東京生まれ。15歳の時ベルリンに渡り、17歳でベルリン国立美術学校に入学。1930(昭和5)年同校より金メダルを贈られ帰国。1932(昭和7)年太平洋画会初入選。以後、光風会、帝展などで受賞を重ねる。1936(昭和11)年猪熊弦一郎、小磯良平らと新制作派協会(現・新制作協会)を設立。戦後、1950年代にはサンパウロ・ビエンナーレ、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ等に出品。「あらそい」が第１回グッゲンハイム国際美術賞に輝いた。1959〜70年東京藝術大学で教鞭をとる。1970(昭和45)年、軽井沢に吉村順三設計によるアトリエ山荘が完成。1991(平成３)年『脇田美術館』を開設。1995( 平成７) 年〜2012（平成24）年、東京・第一生命本社ビルに脇田和作品常設ギャラリー。2005(平成17)年11月27日永眠。1991(平成3)年旭日小綬章。1998(平成10)年文化功労者。2005(平成17)年従四位を追賜。

  • Biography

    KAZU WAKITA (1908−2005)
    Born in Tokyo in 1908. He had a chance to move to Berlin at the age of 15 and entered the National Art School of Berlin at the age of 17. He was awarded a gold medal from the school in 1930, and returned to Japan. He was awarded his first prize at the Taihei Youga Kai in 1932, followed by many awards at Kofukai and the Imperial Fine Arts Academy Art Exhibition (Teikoku Bijutsu-in). Founded Shin Seisaku-ha Kyokai (currently Shin Seisaku Kyokai) with Ryohei Koiso and Genichiro Inokuma. After the war, in the 1950s, his works were exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Venice Biennale, etc. He won the first Guggenheim International Art Award. He taught at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1959 to 1970. Atelier Villa designed by Junzo Yoshimura was completed in Karuizawa in 1970. “Wakita Museum of Art” was opened in 1991. A permanent gallery of Kazu Wakita's works was open at the Dai-ichi Life Headquarters Building in Tokyo, from 1995 to 2012. He passed away on November 27, 2005. His contributions were recognized with The Order of the Rising Sun in 1991, and Person of Cultural Merits in 1998. He was raised to Junior Fourth Court Rank after his death.
